Bereits bei der etymologischen Untersuchung gab es Diskussionen unter Linguisten, ob das moderne Gerund von einer Urform in der Angel-Sächsischen Sprache abstammt oder nicht, da es zu jener Zeit ein eindeutiges Gerundium in der Sprache gab. Rusteberg stellt dieses challenge wie folgt dar:
„The Anglo - Saxon Gerund is actually an inflected Infinitive, preceded within the dative case by means of the preposition ´to´“ (1874: 1). (...) Wie Rusteberg zu den oben tabellarisch erfassten Fällen weiter ausführt, wird jedoch nur die
